Whether as a mechanic or a hairstylist, skilled trades are in demand and offer students limitless opportunities for growth and success to fit their unique interests.

Eight secondary school students from the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) pursuing a career in skilled trades were recently awarded the 2020-21 Linda Fabi Bursary.

The bursary provides funding for students enrolled in Grade 12, in-person or distance learning, who are pursuing a trade through college or apprenticeship programs.

Among the recipients from Cambridge are Joshua Dardarian from Jacob Hespeler Secondary School, Maxim Clayton from Preston High School and Cody Bacher from Southwood Secondary School.

‘It feels amazing to be selected for this award,” said Bacher.

“Thank you so much for recognizing me. I feel so honoured and very thankful to Linda Fabi for making this possible. I would also like to thank my shop teacher, Mr. Stockford for nominating me for this award.”

Since graduating in June, Bacher is planning to enrol in an apprenticeship or college program where he will pursue a career as a diesel mechanic.

Each year, students are selected to receive the award named in honour of Linda Fabi, former director of education for the WRDSB.

Students are nominated for the bursary by a teacher where particular attributes are considered. These include: how the student has demonstrated perseverance, overcome obstacles, made an impressive comeback during their high school career, and a staff member’s recommendation.

An adjudication committee consisting of Linda Fabi, chairperson Joanne Weston, vice-chair Scott Piatkowski, and trustee Jayne Herring selected this year’s eight winning students.

“The board of trustees is pleased to be able to offer this award to such deserving students. They have all shown determination and perseverance in a year of unprecedented challenges. We wish them success in their schooling, apprenticeships and careers,” said Weston.

The Linda Fabi Bursary was established by the board of trustees in celebration and recognition of the many contributions and achievements of Linda Fabi during her tenure as director of education for the WRDSB.

The total amount of the Bursary is up to $2,000, which is presented annually. Depending on the number of applicants, the award is divided so that several eligible applicants can be recognized.

“Congratulations to our eight recipients,” said Linda Fabi.

“We know that we will always need expertise in the trades in our country and we are pleased that they have chosen this direction in their careers.”
