Lucky's brings affordable gourmet comfort food to Preston

'We're there to ensure that they get high quality food and help them save a few bucks'

When a window of opportunity opened to open a new takeout business in Preston, Trevor Luchuk decided to take it. Two months later, Lucky’s Gourmet Comfort Food is gaining notoriety for its street-style menu.

"The feedback has been amazing," said the owner and CEO of Lucky’s. “We've only been open for two months, and this has been the worst month for restaurants, and we're maintaining and I couldn't be happier."

Coming from a sales background, Luchuk said his passion in his new business lies within providing quality customer service.

"I had that trained into me by my superiors when I was working in customers service, so working in sales, I would go above and beyond for my customers," said Luchuk, who greets customers, answers the phone, fills out orders and handles other operational duties at Lucky's.

"Love is through food too, right? That comfort food, it keeps them warm, it keeps them happy, that's what our goal is here," he said.

Located at 763 King St. E., residents can spot Lucky's by it's green and yellow neon sign and takeout window. Operating everyday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., residents can order in-person at the takeout window, or call to place an order. Lucky’s can also be found on Uber Eats and online.

By offering street food, he said Lucky's is following a trend that is being seen in Europe and in South America.

“This model is highly successful in Toronto, and in the European sections of the city,” Luchuk said, "This style of eating, like being able to walk up up, getting your food and walking away, is very popular.

"Especially now in the pandemic with the increased prices at the grocery store, it's actually getting cheaper to eat out, we're getting to that threshold."

Lucky's menu offers burgers, wraps, sandwiches and grilled cheese. There's also unique items like deep fried ravioli and Japanese crepes. With all their food, Luchuk said Lucky’s aims to provide items that are affordable and taste good.

"If you're just talking quality and price point, that's where I strive to beat everyone else," said Luchuk.

Currently, the most popular items on Lucky’s menu are the smash burger and deep-fried ravioli, but the fried chicken sandwich is also gaining in popularity. Another item customers enjoy from Lucky’s is the gravy, which is made in house with bones and marrow.

“There's at least a dozen people come here every week for a burger,” said Luchuk. “There's nothing on there (the menu) that doesn't move."

Opening in November 2021, Lucky’s occupies the former location of a business called Sauce Boss. A former shareholder within the business, Luchuk said he acquired the space from the previous owner at the right time.

"I've always had my own vision on for what Sauce Boss, Lucky's, should've been or could've been," said Luchuk. "Before I was in sales, I was definitely passionate about food."

As a business owner, he mentions there's been less stress on him operating a takeout-only restaurant.

“I can only imagine the headaches that some of those restaurants are going through trying to make it serviceable and trying to follow the guidelines as well, because it's always changing."

While the takeout format has been successful for Lucky’s, Luchuk said he is interested in opening a seating section one day to give customers two different options. He also plans to turn Lucky's into a franchise, but plans on expanding the business into food trucks, making this Preston location the only brick and mortar store.

"I want to make sure the brand is consistent and the quality remains the same," said Luchuk about his vision.

In the meantime, residents can keep their eyes peeled for a Lucky's food truck this spring.
