Local support is building for Canadian truckers involved in a cross-country convoy expected to roll into Ottawa on Saturday to protest the federal vaccine mandate at border crossings.

Several Cambridge residents who support the movement and its condemnation of the Canadian government's vaccination requirement for truckers say they will gather on Highway 401 overpasses Thursday morning as the convoy comes through Cambridge.

An estimated 1,200 truckers have joined the convoy to protest the mandate that requires them to be fully vaccinated when crossing into Canada from the US or face quarantine.

The so-called "Convoy for Freedom" is expected to roll through the area between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thursday, slowing traffic along the highway as it heads to Ottawa.

Facebook posts say supporters will be "proudly waving" the Canadian flag as they pass.

An organization called Canada Unity is gathering online signatures calling for the government to end the vaccine requirement and any associated fines.
