With the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend, the City of Cambridge, along with area municipalities across the Region of Waterloo, are reminding residents of the importance of following the current stay-at-home order and public health safety measures.

To avoid an increase in COVID-19 cases, residents are advised to limit celebrations to only individual households, wear a mask, and practice distancing when in public spaces.

Additionally, public firework displays will not be permitted and public events have once again been cancelled across the region this year. Fireworks cannot be set off in municipal parks, sports fields, laneways, or on school board property. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution with private backyard firework displays to avoid injury and increased strain on emergency resources. Cambridge City Hall and city facilities will continue to be closed as part of the current stay-at-home order. Easily access all the city services you need by downloading the Service Cambridge app or access the online portal here.

“I know most of us are eager to have a somewhat normal summer, but we need stay the course this long weekend so that we can have a full and active summer,” says Deputy Mayor Mike Mann. “I urge everyone to stay focused on finding creative ways to celebrate at home rather than together during the stay-at-home order. Let’s look to the future and keep safe this weekend.”

There are still a variety of ways to safely enjoy the holiday weekend in the community.

  • As an essential service, the Cambridge Farmer’s Market remains open. Seasonal, local produce from the Cambridge Farmers’ Market can enhance a picnic or barbeque. Residents can visit Saturday, May 22nd  from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shop efficiently to better accommodate capacity limits or order ahead of time online at the market’s online store for faster pickup.
  • Keep dinner easy and #DineFromHome. Many local restaurants remain open for takeout or delivery and can be found on the map here.
  • In honour of Queen Victoria's birthday, the #RecFromHome team has shared tips on how you can host your own tea party that includes a colouring sheet for indoor fun. Find these activities and more here.
