For those walking through Riverside Park it’s impossible to ignore the fenced off grandstand located at the main baseball diamond.
The first order of business in repairing the roof over the seating area was prepping the area and removing beams. That is now complete and the roof is ready to be replaced.
The work was made necessary through natural wear and tear.
“The grandstand is currently closed while it undergoes roof replacement and painting,” the city of Cambridge said in a statement to Cambridge Today.
“This work is being undertaken to address structural issues that arose as a result of deterioration over time.”
The city says the budget for this project is approximately $437,233 and is anticipated to be completed in December of this year.
The grandstand serves a number of purposes for the community, the city says.
“This capital project benefits the community by furthering the City’s Placemaking objective and goal of sustainability, which are areas of focus in the City’s Strategic Plan – Cambridge Connected,” they said.
“Placemaking aims to provide a wide range of destinations and activities for our community. The Grandstand is a key feature in historic Riverside Park and is used in three events traditionally held there – Kin Carnival, Canada Day Celebration, and Ribfest.”
Placemaking projects refer to ‘initiatives that create welcoming and authentic spaces, support community connections, and help drive local economic development in our core areas’ according to the city’s website.
Above and beyond those three major events, the city aims to expand the use of the grandstand as it furthers its Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
“Intervention and investment in city facility assets like the grandstand ensure that the structure can be enjoyed by future generations and visitors to Riverside Park.”
