The city wants to spend $450,870 to replace the deteriorated roof at the Riverside Park grandstand.

Council is being asked to approve additional funding as part of a recommendation to award a contract for the first phase of restoration work on the Riverside Park grandstand next spring.

The cost of replacing the roof and deck on the century-old grandstand came in at a cost of $450,870 after a tender for the project went out in April.

Elgin Contracting and Restoration came in with the lowest bid, which was 21 per cent below the average bid but still $44,973 over budget.

The city is asking council for permission to dip a little deeper into its facility maintenance reserve fund to complete the work.

Staff closed the grandstand in September 2020 after assessing the condition of the roof.

The work next spring will also include replacing any rotted beams and cleaning and painting the steel frame below the roof level.

Phase 2 of the project to renovate the lower roof is being considered as part of next year’s capital budget.
