Council to approve conversion of former church into four residential units

Developer wants to convert an existing church building on Portland Street into a four-unit apartment building

The map shows the location of 42 Portland St., where the developer is proposing to build four dwelling units in the place of an existing place of worship.

Four more dwelling units could be approved for Cambridge's East Galt area.

A staff report coming to council July 27 is recommending council approve the applicant's request for official plan and zoning bylaw amendments so an existing place of worship at 42 Portland St. can be converted into an apartment building with four residential units. Affordable housing units are not proposed as part of the building. Site-specific official plan and zoning bylaw amendments are required to facilitate the conversion.

Staff are requesting an RM3 site-specific zone, rather than the RM1 site-specific zone, to permit the four-unit apartment since the property is not located in the city centre. The developer proposes five parking spaces, a number that meets the minimum required parking for a four-unit apartment.

The council meeting begins at 5 p.m. and will be streamed live via the city's YouTube channel.
