There's been a substantial drop in the number of active COVID-19 cases reported by Region of Waterloo Public Health.

Following Monday's dashboard update, the total rose to a record high of 8,506. As of Tuesday morning, the caseload was down to 4,483.

"Due to changes in case and contact management data entry as a result of the surge in cases, the definition of resolved cases was updated yesterday to automatically count a case as resolved 14 days after their episode date (unless the case is hospitalized)," said public health spokesperson, Sharon Ord, in an e-mail statement. "This update resulted in a drop in our active number of cases and more accurately represents the situation in our community."

Ord said the change aligns with Public Health Ontario's definition for active and resolved cases.
