Kidding around with people in the baby business

Stormtroopers and caped crusaders were among the special guests that dropped by Saturday for the Kids and Babies Pop-Up market in downtown Cambridge

A section of Main Street in downtown Cambridge was closed to traffic, but open for fun Saturday during the Kids and Babies Pop Up Market.

“We’ve had a pop-up market on the second Sunday of each month, as part of our Street Crawl that started in June and goes straight through to October” said Brian Kennedy, executive director the Downtown Cambridge BIA. “Each Pop-Up Market has a theme and this one is Kids and Babies.”

The event was organized in collaboration with the KW Moms Club and included many local visitors and businesses as well as some special guests from beyond our galaxy.

“We have 15 small business vendors here today as well as one of our downtown businesses, Encore Threads & Treasures, that is celebrating their one-year anniversary,” said Kennedy. “They have done some enhanced activations of the space, including bringing in some special guests to join us such as Spiderman, the Little Mermaid, and a group of Stormtroopers. We kind of teamed up to make the event a little bit bigger than some of the other ones we’ve done.”

It was a family celebration for Bruce Marceau, owner of Encore Threads & Treasures.

“It’s our first birthday and we’re doing a whole bunch of giveaways,” said Marceau. “We have a playground, cupcakes and branded shirts for our first birthday. We’re just, basically saying thank you to our community for all the support they have given us through our one-year journey.”

Their shop caters, specifically to children and young families.

“We sell pre-loved clothing, toys and books for kids from new-born to 12 years old,” he said. “We also sell brand new clothing toys and books. Our toys are more focused on educational, eco-friendly, and sensory driven so, no lights, no buttons, no technology.”

The Kids and Babies Pop-Up Market is one of many events organized by Kerri Rubicini, owner and founder of KW Moms Club.

“We run mom and baby programming, kind of like mommy-and-me type classes in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge,” said Rubicini. “I also do special events like this one and I am running all of the Cambridge Downtown Pop-Up Markets from now until October.”

The KW Moms Club events focus on fun and learning for children and their families.

“With Moms Club we do arts classes, music classes and sensory classes,” she said. “We bring in guest speakers for new parents so, they can meet other people and just do some fun activities in the region.”

She said there is a growing demand for these types of services and events.

“I have owned this business for almost three years, and it keeps on getting bigger,” said Rubicini. “People need this, especially during the last two years when we weren’t able to connect with people. I also do the Womb to Walking Baby Show that is happening on Sunday, Sept. 25 and there will be four to five times as many businesses like this during that event at Bingemans.”
