A local Hindu temple is hoping to do more to help the community and help those in need as a part of their outreach program.

President of Radha Krishna Mandir, Vishnu Balbahadur, said on Saturday they will deliver 60 meals to The Bridges Shelter in Cambridge.

"We've provided meals to our community before – not like this, to The Bridges or a shelter, but we've certainly reached out before. It's just a part of who we are and what we do. Our community is very important to us and as a part of this community, it is only fitting that we reach out to other members of the community."

He said they are hoping the meals will help some support for those who need it most.

"The idea behind this is to reach out to the community. As a part of our culture, as a part of our religion, a big part of it is for our community. It's for some folks who could do with a hand up in our society."

He noted there are currently only 20 volunteers helping to run their outreach program.

"But as we get more involved in this and as more of our days come up – days like Diwali or other cultural days, we certainly will look at providing stuff to the community and it certainly doesn't have to be just the meal."

Balbahadur said they are already planning more outreach events for the future.

"We have the youths of our mandir coming together. These folks are you know, young, have a lot of ideas. We are still sifting through some other ideas that we may want to pursue in the future."
