The most recent provincial ombudsman report showed that 552 complaints were made by residents in Waterloo Region from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
That is more then double the amount the ombudsman received the previous year.
Across the province, the ombudsman received 25,161 complaints over the past fiscal year, which is an increase of over 25 per cent compared to the year prior.
The report was released earlier this month, and over half of the total cases were resolved in two weeks or less.
Complaints made regarding COVID-19 were cited as a reason for the increases. Examples of these cases involve vaccines mandates, and delays of provincial programs.
The ombudsman investigates complaints from individuals who feel they have been treated unfairly by a service such as universities, school boards, and child protection services.
When it comes to education, the report said it received 17 cases about Conestoga College, 16 about the University of Waterloo, and five about Wilfrid Laurier University.
Additionally, a total of 23 cases were received about the Waterloo Regional District School Board, and Waterloo Catholic District School Board.
There were 35 cases involving Family and Children's Services.
