As of Friday, the Region of Waterloo has vaccinated 83.11 per cent of eligible residents over five with a first dose and has fully vaccinated 79.34 per cent of eligible residents over the age of five.

Most of the new first and second doses now being given are children's doses.

“The vast majority of these first and second doses are children's doses. If we add the number of doses given plus the number of appointments booked it equals 15,723 of given or planned children's doses. That's approximately 30 per cent of our population estimate for the five to 11 year old age group,” said Lisa Anstey, Grand River Hospital vaccine clinic manager at the Board of Health meeting for the Region of Waterloo Public Health on Friday.

“And you know, really we've accomplished that in just a week as we just started last Friday.”

She said the Waterloo Region administered 24,133 third doses so far.

“As of the end of day yesterday, we have administered 8,613 doses to children aged five to 11 years old,” said Anstey.

She said the regional booking system has open appointments at the three regional vaccine clinics until Jan. 20. And there are 12,100 appointments for youth and adults between Dec. 3 to Dec. 12. There are also 26,800 appointments available between Dec. 13 to Jan. 20.

So far, 7,110 appointments have been booked between Dec. 3 to Jan. 20.

“COVID vaccination for the five to 11 year old group has had a really strong start in our community and we want to keep the momentum going,” said Anstey.

This  does not include the 6,000 appointments planned for the `Every Dose Counts” event at Cambridge Pinebush on Dec. 11 and Dec. 12.
