The region is seeking expression of interest from the community in hopes they can secure service providers and identify operators who can assist with the implementation of three interim housing solutions.
Transitional housing, an emergency shelter and a hybrid shelter/outdoor model are three projects the region will be undertaking to tackle the local homelessness crisis.
The transitional housing program serves as a bridge for those temporarily experiencing homelessness as they find more permanent living arrangements.
The existing transitional housing site has been effective in helping people who have been experiencing homelessness for extended periods move indoors, stabilize their situation and in many cases find permanent housing options.
Work is also ongoing with the Indigenous-led transitional housing expression of interest.
Emergency shelters are a short-term solution to homelessness that helps people meet their basic needs while being connected to housing options.
The hybrid/outdoor model also provides temporary shelter through a property or facility often times in an outdoor tenting set up.
In August, regional council approved these three expansions and additions as part of the Interim Housing Solutions strategy to address the crisis.
In addition, the region plans to release an expression of interest to property owners in hopes of identifying sites available for the strategy.
These additional sites will then be added to the list of region owned sites currently under review.
