Nearly three dozen more tickets have been issued in Waterloo Region for disobeying rules around COVID-19.

Regional Chair Karen Redman provided the update during Friday's community briefing.

She noted 35 new enforcement actions: 18 from May 20 to May 26, and 17 from the previous reporting period.

The vast majority were tickets handed out by police.

"Waterloo Regional Police Service issued 27 tickets under either the Reopening Ontario Act or the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act - with a total payable of $880 each," said Redman.

One ticket was issued following an anti-lockdown rally in Uptown Waterloo on May 2, while 19 tickets were issued after another anti-lockdown rally was held in the same location on May 9.

"Six tickets were issued as a result of the demonstrations at Victoria Park in Kitchener on May 16," said Redman. "One ticket was issued at a private residence in Waterloo for obstructing a person performing a duty in accordance with a continued order."

Four $880 tickets were also issued locally due to gatherings at private residences: three by Kitchener bylaw, one by Cambridge bylaw.

Two $240 tickets were issued under the face-covering bylaw, and Region of Waterloo Public Health ticketed Innocente Brewing Company for allegedly failing to obey a continued order and providing dine-in service; that fine is $1,130.
