NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF CAMBRIDGE
*************************
The City of Cambridge is working to reopen outdoor recreational amenities following the Province of Ontario's announcement yesterday that a number of activities can reopen effective Saturday, May 22.

Outdoor recreational amenities scheduled to reopen in over 365 hectares of park areas across the city include:

  • Basketball courts
  • Tennis, pickleball courts, volleyball courts at Riverside Park
  • Soccer fields, baseball diamonds (limit of five people)
  • Skate parks
  • Disc golf
  • Lawn bowling
  • Outdoor adult fitness equipment

“This welcome news comes just in time for the long weekend and I would like to thank staff for working so hard to get everything opened quickly,” said Deputy Mayor Mike Mann. “Hopefully, this is the start of a great summer as more and more activities resume over the next few months. At the same time, we must remain extremely careful as the vaccine rollout continues. The pandemic is not over yet.”

Outdoor team sports and recreational classes are still not permitted. Outdoor limits for social gatherings and organized public events will be expanded to five people, which will allow these amenities to be used for up to five people, including with members of different households. However, Public Health continues to caution people to limit contact with those outside of your household as much as possible.

During regular circumstances, sport fields are typically reserved for teams who have booked the spaces; however, with group sports paused for physical distancing, the City of Cambridge is waiving booking requirements for non-fenced fields and allow public use. Gated fields with a surrounding fence will remain closed; all unfenced fields will be open for use. We ask that members of the public continue to keep off closed fields as we complete maintenance to ensure they are ready for use when we are able to reopen.

Please note that the Riverside Bike Park will remain closed until seasonal repairs and renovations are complete. Picnic shelters also remain closed. An opening time will be announced at a later date.

Splashpads and pools remain closed under the province’s reopening plan. Playgrounds and dog parks were previously reopened earlier this spring.

Under the new plan, restrictions will be eased gradually though June, July and August based on vaccination rates and key public health and health-care indicators. The current stay-at-home order remains in place, with the exception of these newly announced changes to some outdoor activities.

Staff are working to update and remove signage for Saturday. All public health and social distancing measures remain in effect.
