Region moves forward with plan to extend LRT to Cambridge

After a lengthy debate, the Region of Waterloo will move ahead with a business case to extend the ION's tracks to Cambridge after cost estimates for the project pegging the final price tag at $4.5 billion threw Stage 2 of the LRT in doubt. The business case, which is integral to securing funding from upper levels of government once all design work is completed, will now include three options, two of which shorten the route at reduced costs. It will also include consideration and costs for a bus rapid transit.

Virtual town hall to address Waterloo Region drug issues

Regional councillor Rob Deutschmann will be hosting a virtual town hall on June 1 to discuss Waterloo Region’s drug-related crisis. Most recent data from the Waterloo Region Integrated Drug Strategy shows there have been 27 suspected overdose related deaths in the region in 2023 as of May 5. 

Region's hybrid shelter home to 11 who left Cambridge encampments

It’s been just under a month since people first began living at the Region of Waterloo’s first hybrid shelter. Since the initial group moved in on April 27, 42 of the 50 cabins have been filled, said The Working Centre’s director Joe Mancini. The first residents were pulled from the groups living at various encampments within Waterloo region including 11 who came from Cambridge, the majority from the 150 Main St. encampment, with some coming from other outlying camps in the city.

Go-karts could be coming to Cambridge Centre mall

MHBC, an urban planning company, has submitted a Minor Zoning By-law Amendment application to the City of Cambridge on behalf of mall owners Morguard for use of the mall’s ice rink floor to be converted to an electric go-kart facility.

Cambridge cancer survivor gets ultimate Blue Jays experience

Cambridge’s Joel Moscato, 10, who is in remission from Stage-4 Hodgkin's lymphoma, cheered on his favourite player and team from behind home plate on May 20 with a sign that read “Hey Bo, I beat cancer like you beat the pitchers.” Not long after, Joel was called down to the dugout and was given a ball and a bat. Not done there, the Blue Jays invited him for a tour of the clubhouse where he met first baseman Brandon Belt.

Cambridge man faces new trial over 2019 impaired driving acquittal

A Cambridge man who claimed he was in shock when he drank wine at home after his Mazda struck a transport truck on Highway 401 near Milton in 2019 will be tried for impaired driving again after the Superior Court of Justice granted the Crown's appeal of his acquittal.

Cambridge committee of adjustment chair violated conflict of interest: report

Cambridge council will decide this week whether to follow a recommendation to appoint a new chair to the city's committee of adjustment after the city's integrity commissioner found the current chair breached conflict of interest in 2022. The breach was the chair failing to recuse herself from discussion about an application for a property she is a neighbour of.
