It's the day many parents and caregivers have been waiting for.

On Tuesday morning, both Ontario's and Waterloo Region's vaccination booking systems were made available for children between the ages of five and 11.

According to Ontario's health minister, more than 68,000 appointments were scheduled through the provincial portal in the first two hours.

Here in Waterloo Region, more than 8,000 appointments were made between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. --- although that includes appointments for third doses.

A spokesperson with Region of Waterloo Public Health said out of those, 6,550 appointments were made for children to get shots between Saturday, November 27 and Sunday, December 12.

Children's doses are being prioritized in that timeframe as the three regional clinics will only be administering first and second shots.

Appointments for third doses will be made available again at those clinics starting December 13.
