Winter Walk Day is an attempt to promote fitness and environmental responsibility.

Students and staff at the Waterloo Region District School Board will lace up their boots for Winter Walk Day on Feb. 1.

The initiative, in partnership with Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region, encourages participants to limit the use of vehicle transportation and walk, bike or wheel to school.

“Encouraging our families to limit the use of vehicle transportation, not only boosts well-being, it helps reduce fossil fuel emissions and creates a safe active transportation environment around our schools,” the board website said.

“While we understand that these concerns won’t be fixed with one day of action, we hope this will have a ripple effect throughout the rest of the school year, and beyond. We all have a part in making our learning environments, both inside and outside our schools, a safe place for all. Walking, biking or wheeling is a safe, healthy choice for students and families for the journey to school.”

Those who learn remotely or need the bus to get to school can participate by scheduling time to take a walk around the neighbourhood.

Students can register how far they walk and be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of 10 Indigo gift cards by filling out the Student Registration form.

The alternate date in the case of inclement weather will be Feb. 8.
