Waterloo Region's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, has confirmed a child under the age of 10 "recently" has passed away after contracting COVID-19.
"The child had underlying health conditions, there were no school-related or child care-related exposures in this case," said Wang, noting it's the youngest dealth in the province that she's aware of.
Further details have not been released due to privacy protocols and out of respect for the child's family, however she noted the child did not live in a congregate setting and was a resident of the region.
"This is a rare but tragic circumstance and a devastating reminder of the serious nature of this virus," said Wang. "This is a heartbreaking loss, and I wish to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones."
