YMCA of Three Rivers is offering a free mental health program for youth that recently received funding from the federal government.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is providing $6.9 million to Y's across the country so they can offer the program.

Y Mind offers early-intervention coping skills, and also helps them navigate the mental health system.

“Mental health and well-being are pressing needs for youth in our community,” Jen Hutchinson, manager of Y Mind at YMCA of Three Rivers, shared in a news release.

“We’re excited to be able to help youth learn positive coping strategies and access the supports they need through Y Mind, which focuses on providing youth and young adults the tools they need to effectively manage stress and anxiety, while connecting with youth in supportive, inclusive, welcoming, and safe spaces.”

Currently, there are two, seven-week programs. They are also looking at adding more in the spring.

In 2021, the local chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association reported a 40 per cent increase in youth accessing mental health services.
