The Cambridge RedHawks will face the Fort Erie Meteors in the first round of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The Cambridge RedHawks are considered the underdog in the first round of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs after finishing in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

But standings alone don't tell the whole story as they get set to take on the third seed Fort Erie Meteors.

In four matchups against the Meteors during the regular season, it was the RedHawks who came away with three victories, including in the regular season finale when they secured a 2-1 overtime win.

It's the first time the two teams will meet in the playoffs.

Cambridge holds the special teams advantage with the league's second ranked powerplay that's firing at 26.3 per cent and 10th best penalty kill at 82.7 per cent.

Offensively, it's local forward Reid Gammage who leads the way. Playing in all 50 games so far this season, Gammage has scored 22 goals and added 43 assists for 65 points. He'll be relied upon to solve a Fort Erie team that's allowing just 2.2 goals per game.

In net, Lennart Neisse and Brandon Balcar have split time having played 29 and 25 games apiece.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven quarterfinal series is scheduled for Saturday at the Fort Erie Leisureplex.

Puck drop is 7 p.m.
