Arrest made in local arson investigation

Aug. 23 update:
Waterloo Regional Police charge a 22-year-old male in connection to the arsons in Cambridge.

On Aug. 22, 2021, detectives from the General Investigations Unit, with assistance of patrol officers arrested a 22-year-old Cambridge male in relation to the arsons along Franklin Boulevard in Cambridge.

The male has been charged with seven counts of arson, four counts of theft, two counts of mischief and one count of break and enter and commit.

Original Aug. 10 release:
Waterloo Region, Ontario - Waterloo Regional Police are investigating a series of fires in Cambridge.

On Aug. 10, 2021 between 12:50 and 1:20 a.m., four fires were deliberately set and reported.

At approximately 12:50 a.m., emergency services responded to a report of a small fire in the area of Franklin Boulevard and Sheldon Drive. A metal bin at a business was set on fire.

At approximately 12:55 a.m., a dumpster fire was reported at a business on Franklin Boulevard and Avenue Road.

At approximately 1 a.m., a sign was set on fire in the area of Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North.

The fourth fire was reported at approximately 1:20 a.m., in the area of Franklin Boulevard and Glamis Road, where a garbage can was set on fire.

All of the fires were extinguished by Cambridge Fire Department.

No physical injuries were reported, and there was minimal property damage at each fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
