NEWS RELEASE
WATERLOO REGIONAL POLICE SERVICE

The Waterloo Regional Police Service joins police services across Canada for Operation Impact 2021. Operation Impact is a national public awareness campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world by promoting safe driving behaviours.

This year’s theme is, “Be a hero. Aim for zero.” Operation Impact will take place from Oct. 8 to 11, 2021.

Members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Traffic Unit and Neighbourhood Patrol will focus on driving behaviours that put motorists and other road users at risk, including impaired driving by alcohol, drugs or fatigue, aggressive driving, distracted driving and seat belt compliance.

“We remain committed to road safety, however we can’t do it alone,” said Mark Hammer, Acting Staff Sergeant with WRPS’ Traffic Services Unit. “The decision to speed, to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs, or use a communication device while driving, are all conscious choices we make.”

There have been 10 fatal collisions resulting in 11 deaths so far in Waterloo Region this year. Motor vehicle collisions kill about 2,000 Canadians, seriously injure another 10,000 people and injure about 165,000 citizens in this country each year.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service would like to remind all motorists that road safety is everyone's responsibility. Please enjoy responsibly this Thanksgiving weekend. Plan ahead and arrange for a safe drive home.

If you see driving behaviors that put others at risk, please call 911. You could save a life.

Operation Impact is organized by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, under the leadership of the CACP Traffic Safety Committee, in support of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025.
