Thirteen vehicles impounded after WRPS break up unsanctioned car rallies

Each driver received a 90-day license suspension. Seventy tickets were also handed out

Waterloo Region, Ontario - On June 19, 2021, members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service's Traffic Unit, with the assistance of York Regional Police and Barrie Police Service, attended unsanctioned car rally meets throughout Waterloo Region.

Police were able to successfully disperse the car rallies. Through investigation, it was determined that they were attended by many individuals who reside outside of Waterloo Region. 

As part of the investigation into these rallies, ten motor vehicles were impounded for various offences, including stunt driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Three additional vehicles were impounded for impaired operation, and each driver received a 90-day licence suspension. 

An additional 70 tickets were handed out for some of the following offences: 

  • Unsafe vehicles
  • Cannabis readily available to driver
  • No licence
  • No insurance
  • No muffler
  • Improper braking system
  • Improper tires
  • Several other moving and equipment violations resulted in tickets.

Please note: The Government of Ontario will be introducing new legislation on July 1, 2021, called the Moving Ontarians More Safely Act, 2021. The new legislation will increase the licence suspension for racing and stunt driving from seven days to 30 days. Vehicle impoundments will move from seven days to 14 days.*
