'Slurs of hatred' on election sign won't deter Cambridge NDP candidate

'You can’t let something like this throw you off. The majority of people do not view life that way'

Cambridge NDP candidate Marjorie Knight says one of her signs was vandalized and defaced with "slurs of hatred."

After finding one of her election signs vandalized on Tuesday, Cambridge NDP candidate, Marjorie Knight, says it will not deter her as she campaigns to become the next MPP in the lead up to the June 2 provincial election.

“Yesterday someone vandalized my sign, they defaced it with slurs of hatred. Angry? Yes, saddened to see this in my community, deterred? Nope! No turning back,” Knight tweeted yesterday.

Knight is running for a second time in the 2022 provincial election.

Since arriving in Cambridge from Jamaica, over 20 years ago, Knight, a long-time Cambridge resident, works as a community outreach worker and anti-poverty advocate.

Knight ran a competitive campaign in the 2018 election, finishing only four per cent short of winning.

“This incident won’t change me. We know that there are pockets of this in our community, but it is not a reflection of our community. I have had so much support from so many who have rallied around me,” Knight said.

The incident was reported to police. Knight declined to disclose the location of the sign.

“I don’t want to say where or point fingers as this is not productive and it should not be reflection of an area. You can’t let something like this throw you off. The majority of people do not view life that way,” Knight said.

“I just have to know that what I am doing is important and has value. I’m representing Cambridge and the community. They are depending on me to represent them and to bring their views and what they see and feel to Queen's Park.”

Knight says she will not let this incident discourage her. It will only make her push forward.

“It makes me a little angry and a little sad that today in 2022, there are still those who feel they have to express themselves in this way,” Knight said.

“For the majority of our citizens, this is unacceptable. They have rallied around me, and for that I am grateful.”
