COVID hospitalizations in region increase by five

The number of patients in local hospitals with COVID-19 is on the rise again.

43 are in hospital, an increase of five compared to what was reported on the region's dashboard on Thursday. Six patients are in intensive care, which is a decrease of one.

Region of Waterloo Public Health also confirmed 97 new cases Friday, raising the local total to 43,137. The resolved case rate is 97 per cent.

No new deaths were reported. The local death toll is 402.

The active caseload is up to 1,038.

In terms of variants of concern, the region's dashboard shows 449 of those cases (92.4 per cent) have been linked to the Omicron variant since March 6.

85.9 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.30 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 293,000 third doses. 50.8 per cent of those 12 and over have received a third dose.

54.8 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 39.7 are fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the province reported 4,295 new cases Friday.

  • 1,135 COVID-positive patients in hospitals, up from 1,126 reported yesterday. 166 people are in ICU because of COVID-related critical illness, which is up from 159 reported yesterday.
