The Salvation Army Cambridge Citadel

The Salvation Army is an international Christian church, social welfare & relief agency, and a registered charity, active in 134 countries around the world. It has been working in the Galt/Hespeler/Cambridge area for 140 years, and has operated from its 12-16 Shade Street location since June 1950. We are currently operating out of a temporary location at 63 Water Street South whilst renovations take place at our usual site.

The activities and services that are currently being offered by The Salvation Army in Cambridge includes:

  • a very busy foodbank, (the 2nd largest foodbank in the city) providing a monthly supply of groceries to our clients.
  • an emergency clothing bank (offering free seasonally appropriate clothing for all ages and genders). This includes a winter coat & boots program.
  • Community Meals & Snacks – including a weekly kids feeding program. Also, free snacks and drinks (primarily aimed at the unsheltered - people can drop in anytime and receive things like granola bars, candy bars, water etc.)
  • ‘Operation Hope in Cambridge’ - a mobile feeding and resource program for the unsheltered in Cambridge. Using the Emergency Disaster Services truck to drive around the city to provide a hot meal, new socks & underwear, toiletries, camping equipment (when available) etc. upon request.
  • A School-Supplies program.
  • Send 20 underprivileged kids to summer camp each year – for free!
  • Toy Mountain Christmas campaign – providing toys and gifts for almost 3000 children (aged 0-16).
  • Weekly worship services & Bible Study groups
  • Various music programs – including the infamous Salvation Army brass band.
  • Various Men’s, Women’s, Senior’s & Kids groups
  • Zumba classes

When renovations are completed, it is hoped we can introduce new programs and services – such as a ‘Hope Café’ (drop-in space), life-skills classes, newcomer services, an expanded capacity for counselling and emotional support, the introduction of the ‘Pathway of Hope’ case management program. We also plan to make rental space available to the public, at affordable prices, for birthday parties, anniversary events, bar mitzvah’s, business meetings etc.
