INSIDE THE VILLAGE: Ted Nolan speaks his truth on hockey, racism and reconciliation

This week on the podcast: We sit down with the former NHL coach of the year, whose powerful new memoir recounts his journey from Garden River First Nation to the highest levels of our national game

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: Ted Nolan speaks his truth.

The former NHL coach of the year and Memorial Cup Champion is now an author, having recently released a memoir titled Life in Two Worlds: A Coach’s Journey from the Reserve to the NHL and Back.

The book is a brutally honest recollection of how Nolan, born and raised in Garden River First Nation, reached the highest levels of our national game — and the anti-Indigenous racism he endured at many points along the way.

At a time when Canada continues to grapple with how to achieve genuine truth and reconciliation, Nolan’s book is a must-read. As he told Village Media's James Hopkin in a recent feature article : “Hopefully, this can help the ones that follow.”

“Knowledge is the thing that’s going to get us out of here, so the more knowledge we have and the more compassion we have — and the more understanding we have — it’s going to be better for society, it’s going to be better for everyone," Nolan said. "Not to have special treatment, just to have fair treatment.”
