CambridgeToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Eddie Morrison regarding the LRT expansion into Cambridge.

I’m a strong supporter of public transit. However, there is no way that the LRT expansion into Cambridge is justifiable with the $4.5 billion price tag. And one can assume an even higher price tag as we move forward.

We can do better than the LRT expansion into Cambridge.

We can achieve our goals of increasing new development, increasing missing middle housing and affordable housing without the expansion of the LRT. Rapid buses, improved routes, and bus frequency will all achieve what the LRT can.

Better bus transit routes will be what reduces our carbon footprint – not an LRT route that has only one route and is unpredictable in winter.

If we want to commit to new development, density and affordable housing, invest in buses. Spend the 4.5 billion dollars on immediately needed solutions – such as housing affordability and homelessness.

We can have our cake and eat it too – the answer is better bus transit.
