LETTER: Snow and ice covered sidewalk ignored by city

'It is laughable that private residents are required to clear snow from sidewalks within 36 hours, but this property which is owned by either the city, region or school board can be ignored even after a complaint was filed,' writes David Graham

CambridgeToday received the following letter to the editor from reader David Graham in response to our story Council to discuss sidewalk snow clearing options in 2023 budget.

I am wondering who is responsible for clearing the sidewalk at 30 Lauris Avenue, as it was never cleared after any of the snow events we’ve had this winter.

There is a school bus stop located at this location, and the icy sidewalks are dangerous enough for regular pedestrian traffic let alone kids getting on/off a school bus.

Since I have received no response, I put in a complaint with bylaw and now have received no response or action from there either.

This is a dangerous situation that has some liability implications with the city. It is supposed to warm up and rain a bit in the next few days. This will likely not wash away the snow buildup on the sidewalk, but instead turn it to ice making it even more dangerous.

It is laughable that private residents are required to clear snow from sidewalks within 36 hours, but this property which is owned by either the city, region or school board can be ignored even after a complaint was filed with bylaw.
