GUELPH – Professional football is making a return to the University of Guelph.

It was announced Thursday the U of G will be hosting the Toronto Argonauts 2022 training camp as well as its final pre-season game.

The pre-season game goes June 3 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“We love it at the University of Guelph,” said Argos head coach Ryan Dinwiddie in a news release. “The facilities, the accommodations, the food, the hospitality from staff is as professional as any place I’ve been.

“We are thrilled to be back for camp this year, as well as hosting our preseason game against Hamilton at Alumni Stadium.”

The relationship between the Argos organization and the U of G dates back to the 1980s, when training camp was first held there – something that happened numerous times leading up to the turn of the century.

The Guelph campus most recently hosted training camp in 2021 and 2016, and hosted a pre-season Canadian Football League game in 2018.

“We are pleased to welcome back the Toronto Argonauts to the University of Guelph for their training camp,” said the U of G’s director of athletics, Scott McRoberts. “These high-profile events are great for our local community; it will be an exciting month around our campus. Our facilities are among the best in the country at the university level and we look forward to watching the Argos prepare for the 2022 season on our Gryphon field.”

The Argos training camp kicks off this coming Wednesday with a three-day rookie camp that features veteran quarterbacks and first-year CFL players before the team’s roster is cut down to 85 on May. 14.

Veteran Argos are set to arrive on May 15, with the roster trimmed to the final 75 two days later.

The Argos open its preseason slate against Ottawa at TD Place on May 27 and return to Alumni Stadium to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on June 3, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
