Before summer turns to fall, the City of Cambridge is encouraging residents to make the community a cleaner place to live.

The popular Cambridge Community Clean Up event returns on Sept. 16.

People can go to an Idea Exchange location for supplies before hitting the streets to pick up trash and and clean their neighbourhood.

“Cleaning up our parks, trails and public spaces demonstrates we care about our environment and may seem like a small thing but it's directly related to many aspects of the city’s Cambridge Connected Strategic Plan,” Paul Willms, sustainability planner for the City of Cambridge and liaison with Cambridge City Green told CambridgeToday before the spring clean up.

"It’s a collective task that demonstrates pride in our community and its public spaces and is one of the simplest things that can be done to improve our natural environment."

Willms said that prior pandemic anywhere between 3,000 and 6,000 volunteers would come out each year and while numbers have dropped since then, they're beginning to pick back up.

The last community clean up took place on April 22 as part of the city's Earth Day celebrations.

Rain or shine, supplies will be handed out on the scheduled day between 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Groups of 10 or more, or those who wish to do their clean up on a different date, are asked to connect with Willms directly at [email protected] at least three days before.

Once individuals and groups are done, they can use the clean up request app to arrange the pickup of bags.
