Newcomers to the community are being welcomed to an event this Saturday that will help connect them to local programs and services.

In an attempt to make navigating life in a new place easier, the City of Cambridge is hosting a newcomer connections event on Sept. 16.

The event's goal is to help new Canadian residents and ethno-cultural communities familiarize themselves with local services and programs available to them.

Newcomers are able to socialize, form networking connections and engage with one another to establish support systems within the community.

Several information sessions will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. where attendees can learn about in-home and community health programs, wellbeing programs and support for newcomers, the benefits of volunteering, recreation and leisure programs, and settlement programs and supports.

Throughout the day there will also be family art, crafts and activities, refreshments, an art gallery display at the fire hall museum and door prizes. The first 100 people in attendance receive a free gift bag.

The event is another aspect of the Cambridge Newcomer Outreach program that was launched in 2020 by the city in partnership with Kinbridge Community Association.

The program aims to offer services and programs year-round and is funded by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to support newcomer permanent residents, convention refugees and Ukrainian temporary residents.

Doors open at 10 a.m. and the event runs until 1 p.m. at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts at 60 Dickson St. Residents are asked to access the space through the David Durward Centre.
