Cambridge's Beeksma selected in CFL draft

Three Guelph Gryphons were taken in the Canadian Football League draft on Thursday.

Leading the way was receiver Kiondre Smith, who was taken in the fourth round (37th overall) by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. A two-time All-Canadian, Smith averaged 94 receiving yards a game and 13 yards per reception to go with four touchdowns last season. He was also second in the OUA in punt return yards.

Hamilton also selected linebacker Jared Beeksma in the fifth round (46th overall). Beeksma, a Cambridge native, ranked 10th in the country with 6.1 tackles per game in 2021.

Beeksma is a graduate of Jacob Hespeler Secondary school.

Defensive lineman Jeremy Kapelanski was taken by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the sixth round.
