ChefD brings catering business to Cambridge

A storefront at 184 Main St. will soon be a catering business run by ChefD

A well known local chef is opening up a new catering and takeout business in Galt.

Darryl Fletcher, better known as ChefD in the culinary world, is in the final stages of transforming 184 Main St. into a foodies dream.

“We’re going to do all of our catering out of there,” Fletcher said.

“As of right now we’ll do event catering but we’re also going to do a takeout business.”

Many may recognize Fletcher from his television show At Home with ChefD on Rogers TV. He’s also appeared on CTV News at Noon Kitchener, CTV Vancouver, CTV Edmonton, City TV’s Breakfast Television, CHCH Morning Live and is the author of two cook bookettes.

Some of his more famous customers include Blue Rodeo, Michael Bublé, Big Bad Voodoo Daddies, Diana Krall, Melissa Etheridge, the late BB King and Stuart McLean.

But despite the bright lights of television and the famous names he’s prepared meals for, Fletcher remains committed to supporting his local community.

“We support local day in, day out, whether its farmers or events,” he said.

“The Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation has been one of our go-to charities we try to support.”

Opening up a new business had been in the plans for a while and Fletcher had looked at a number of places. Living in Blair at the time and often making the short walk to Galt for dinner or to walk his dogs, the area seemed like a great spot.

“We looked at this location first and thought that it could be it” he said.

“I love the location. We’re not right in downtown but were still in Galt. When this opportunity arose it was great. I walk into the place it just feels right, it feels like home.”

The menu will feature lots of Italian, one of Fletcher’s favourite cuisines to cook, including raviolis, pastas, lasagnes, risottos and soups. He's also always wanted a bakery, so there’s plans to sell a variety of donuts, butter tarts and coffee.

For Fletcher, he’s excited to be able to embark on a new journey in a place so dear to him.

“It’s a blank slate,” he said.

“We get to try different things instead of labelling it as one specific type of restaurant. That's why it's called 184 Main St. It's what I’m most excited about.”

A grand opening is scheduled for March 16.
