City wants community input on site of Jumpstart multi-sport court

Residents asked to complete survey and make their pick for the location of $1 million Canadian Tire Jumpstart multi-sport court

The city has narrowed down the location of its new multi-sport court to three parks, but wants feedback from the community to choose the best option.

Canadian Tire's Jumpstart charity is committed to giving the city $500,000 for the construction of a multi-sport court in either Churchill Park, Lions Can-Amera Park or Hespeler Optimist Park.

Depending on the final site chosen, site servicing and additional upgrades will push the all-inclusive budget of the project to between $1.1 million and $1.6 million, with the southwest corner of Churchill Park being the most expensive option.

The city has created a full report detailing the suitability assessment of each location, listing opportunities and challenges based on everything from proximity to existing facilities and parking to pedestrian access and cost.

Residents are invited to visit the survey on Engage Cambridge site until May 30 to voice an opinion on the project.

Jumpstart’s Multi Sport Courts typically feature high contrast acrylic court surfacing for barrier-free access and comfortable play, fixed and adjustable equipment, LED lighting, shade canopies, accessible bleachers and double-wide player bench areas, sport court lines to welcome a variety of sports/para sports including pickleball, volleyball, sitting volleyball, wheelchair tennis and basketball, areas for unstructured play.

Equipment layout and site furnishings vary from court to court depending on the unique interests of each community.

To date six sport courts have been built across Canada with more in the planning stages.

Cambridge plans to begin construction on the project in May of next year.
