Members of the Cambridge Food Drive Initiative show off the donations they collected alongside Cambridge Food Bank Executive Director Dianne McLeod.

The Cambridge Food Drive Initiative is on a mission to reach 5,600 lbs of food donated to the Cambridge Food Bank.

The community group will be hosting several events in the coming weeks including a charity BBQ on July 21 at the Hespeler Village Market.

"With the rise in the food bank's needs, which is higher than last year, we felt this was the least we could do," said Jaime Colwell, founder of the food initiative to CambridgeToday.

The group started in 2022 with the intention of purchasing skids of fruit cups, peanut better and donating other food donations to ensure kids in the city are being fed an no kids goes to school hungry.

The food bank has reported serving more people than ever before in the history of the organization. With the rising price of food, cost of living and inflation they expect this number to keep on climbing.

Colwell is very familiar with the Food Bank as it was a service that was there for him many years ago when he needed it. Starting this group is a way he can give back to an organization that helped save his life.

The Cambridge Food Drive Initiative is also looking for volunteers for events on July 23, 29 and 30.

"People can volunteer by joining us at an in-person location, by making calls, sharing posts from social media or donating nut free bars, fruit cups, peanut butter, tuna or cereal," Colwell said.
