D Spot hopes to be the go-to dessert shop in Cambridge

The chain has expanded to the city on Hespeler Road

Business is in Arman Manasiya's blood.

Manasiya, owner of the new D Spot Dessert on Hespeler Road, was often thrust into various roles at his father's printing company while growing up in India.

As his father's health began to decline, he took on more responsibility and developed the skills he'd need for when he wanted to forge his own path.

That path began five years ago when he decided to make the move to Canada.

He made the trip overseas with a dream, an astute business background and words of advice from his father.

"My father is my role model," Manasiya said.

"He used to tell me, when you go to Canada, make sure you do your own business. It will generate money for your house. I like Canada and it's a good opportunity."

Leaving everything he knew was a big decision. Not only was he an integral part of the family business, he had practiced the Indian system of medicine as a doctor after finishing his education. The move was a gamble but one Manasiya was willing to take.

Getting started was helped along by the fact his sister and cousin own the D Spot Dessert in Richmond Hill. It gave him insight into what the restaurant was all about and created a natural fit.

As the name indicates, desserts anchor the menu, with everything from ice cream, waffles, skillet cookies, donuts and cake.

But that's not all residents can expect to satisfy their taste buds as the kitchen also turns out savoury options. Hot dogs, pizza, loaded fries and chicken sandwiches are available for those looking for a fuller meal.

Just as important as the food, Manasiya is hoping to create an atmosphere residents feel comfortable in and are eager to come back to. The vibrant colours and mouthwatering aromas inside are the hooks he hopes convinces customers to indulge.

"The people with the sweet tooth, it's the best place for them," he said.

"It's a lively atmosphere. Right now we're doing a soft launch and we've seen very good responses. Before people would go to the D-Spot Dessert in Mississauga and Kitchener, but now they come here, so it's good for the community."

With rising costs and people being cautious of how they spend their money, Manasiya admits running a business in the current market isn't easy but believes Cambridge presents the right spot to start.

"It's a lot," he said.

"It's a very tough thing to start a business but having our family members working together made it easy. Cambridge is also a very good community."

D Spot Dessert will be hosting a grand opening on Jan. 6 with a buy-one-get-one deal happening throughout the day.
