Dance and gala celebrates Cambridge Community Players 90th anniversary on Saturday

Tickets are still available for the celebration taking place at the Water Street theatre

A dance and gala scheduled for Saturday at the Cambridge Community Players on Water Street is the latest celebration of the theatre's 90th anniversary.

Formerly the Galt Little Theatre, its roots date back to 1933 when Galt Collegiate Institute principal Dr. T.H. Wholton created a group called the Galt Collegiate Players with the help of students and staff.

Ninety years and a few name and location changes later and the current version now calls 47 Water St. S home.

A DJ, music, dancing, food and drink, and raffles are all part of Saturday's festivities.

"We've had some dances in the past but we really wanted to celebrate 90 years as a community theatre in a big way," Jane McWilliams, secretary for Cambridge Community Players and head of the 90th anniversary committee, said.

"We wanted to make it a gala because it's not every group that can say they've been running for 90 years. We're saying 'dress to impress' but that really leaves it open to dress in any way you want, by style, decade or theme."

McWilliams said the theatre takes pride in representing Cambridge but despite its lengthy history, many residents are unaware about its existence.

Run by 100 per cent volunteers, the team is constantly trying to market the theatre and recruit new members with a variety of skill sets for the four shows they put on each year.

"We have so many talented people, some newer members, some who have been sharing their talents and energy for decades," McWilliams said.

"It's also important for people of all ages to know there is always a place for them to join and share their own talents on stage, back stage, front of house or through publicity."

Whether residents have fond memories of the theatre or are hoping to learn more, all are invited to the dance and gala.

"I'm looking forward to truly honouring our past 90 years and to really kick off the next 90," McWilliams said.

"What better way than a big party?"
