Enhanced school zones are being modified in a number of streets this year.

The city will implement extended school zones and stopping restrictions in response to a request from the Student Transportation Service of Waterloo Region to improve student safety.

Enhanced school zones with 40 km/h speed limits will be extended along Main Street from Shade Street to 50 metres east of Oak Street; on Elgin Street North from Braemar Road to Northview Heights Drive; on Renwick Avenue from 40 m north of Gerrard Avenue to 50 m east of Queen Street East; Bismark Drive from 50 m west of Blair Road to 75 m west of Devil’s Creek Drive (easterly leg); and Adler Drive from  20 m east of Cooper Street to 35 m east of Lardner Street.

Changes are also in the works to expand the school bus loading zone on Renwick Avenue in front of Hillcrest Public School to accommodate a second bus. New signage will identify the extended zone and its effective enforcement between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday from Sept. 1 to June 30.

New stop signs will be installed to replace yield signs on Erb and Tiffany streets near St. Michael Catholic School where they intersect with Winterhalt Avenue.

On Rouse Avenue, no stopping signs will be added to the school zone in front of Avenue Road Public School near the intersection at Gail Street.

The city's traffic and parking bylaw has been amended to reflect the enhanced school zones. New signage is expected to cost in the neighbourhood of $700 and will be funded from the city's 2023 transportation operating budget.

The new measures follow a number of school zone traffic safety enhancements implemented by the city in 2022.
