A Cambridge Family is collecting donations for the Kidney Foundation of Canada in part with the Dr. Tom Liu Memorial Kidney Walk.
Having raised 2,800 pounds of clothes last year, Tracey Babineau and her family are collecting clothes to be donated through Kidney Clothes, an organization in part with the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
After Babineau’s father-in-law was diagnosed with kidney disease, he needed a new kidney. The life-saving treatment extended his life around 30 years, allowing him to meet most of his grandchildren.
Now, Babineau and her family raise money in his honour and to support the ever evolving research for the Kidney Foundation. To this date they have raised over $7,000.
“I met a friend who worked for the Kidney Foundation and then I started volunteering and helping her out at the walks,” said Babineau.
The clothing drive is named after her daughter Katie and they are accepting donations of gently used clothing, textiles, shoes, purses and bags.
The goal Babineau and her family have set is $1,500, currently they have raised $1,000 and are hoping the money from the clothes will put them over the top.
“They can drop off their clothing right at my front door or my garage at 275 Blair Rd. If they're in the Cambridge area, I'm happy to do a pickup as well,” said Babineau. “It's always fun, because I come home and I just find things sitting on my porch. I'm never sure what I'm coming home to, but the community has been wonderful!”
Setting up one of these clothing drives is easy, said Babineau. “All you have to do is reach out to Kidney clothes and they’ll set you up with what you need.”
Having done this donation drive the last few years, Babineau is confident in the community that they’ll help support in any way they can.
“Everyone's got stuff in their closets that they're looking to get rid of and it's for a good cause.”
Donations can be made directly to Babineau’s Kidney Walk page here, and clothing donations can be dropped off directly at her house at 275 Blair Rd.
