Five new COVID-related deaths reported in region

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported five new COVID-related deaths on Monday afternoon -- a man in his 50s, a man in his 60s, a man in his 70s and two men in their 90s. It raises the local death toll to 429.

Data was not available Friday due to the Rogers' outage. It's the first update since June 30.

Hospitalizations have more than doubled since that time. 33 patients are in local hospitals with COVID-19, with four in intensive care.

Health officials also confirmed 357 new cases, putting the overall total at 47,497. The resolved case rate is 98.4 per cent.

The active caseload is down slightly to 270.

In terms of variants of concern, the region's dashboard shows 158 of those cases (93.5 per cent) have been linked to the Omicron variant since May 29.

86.5 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.36 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 303,000 third doses. 52 per cent of residents have received a third dose.

53.5 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 40.9 are fully vaccinated.
