Cambridge's Jamie Colwell is the recipient of the Volunteer Award of Merit given out by the Cambridge Food Bank to a volunteer who has gone above and beyond.

Jamie Colwell knows all about the critical services the Cambridge Food Bank offers residents of this city.

That's because he at one time needed to access them. Years later, Colwell has been paying it back by being a staunch advocate and dedicated volunteer.

And on Tuesday night, his efforts were recognized with the Volunteer Award of Merit for his work raising food and money through his group the Cambridge Food Drive Initiative.

"Extremely surprised," Colwell said of receiving the award.

"There are so many great volunteers in the region that support the Cambridge Food Bank. I'm grateful to be considered for this award. Being recognized for your efforts is so special. It truly means a lot."

This past summer, Colwell and his team could be seen posted outside of various grocery stores on the weekend gathering donations for their food drive.

When the final total was calculated, they had raised 6,200 pounds of food.

The issues of food insecurity and the rising cost of living have been well documented .

In August, the food bank said it had seen a 40 per cent increase in new households accessing its services compared to the same time last year.

Without the work of volunteers like Colwell the food bank would struggle to keep up with the increased demand says Sarah Tooze, donor development manager at the Cambridge Food Bank.

"Our staff often hear stories of participants who have overcome obstacles and feel compelled to pay it forward," Tooze said.

"It’s one thing that keeps us going during tough times of increased need. Jamie’s story is no different. What shines through is his spirit. He's unique in that he works hard to inspire and include others. His story reminds us of what is achieved when individuals unite in pursuit of a common goal."

Tooze admits selecting one recipient for the award can be tough given many in the community make an effort to volunteer their time, but Colwell's efforts stood out.

"Choosing only one recipient of the Volunteer Award of Merit each year is always challenging, as we have many volunteers who are passionate and committed to our mission of  'Building Health and Belonging Through Food'," she said.

"This past year, Jamie and his team at Cambridge Food Drive Initiative, including family, friends and logistics help from B.G. Moving Corp., took the challenge above and beyond with their dedication, positivity and determination."

Colwell hopes his story will inspire others to get involved.

Plans are already underway for more food drives in 2024 and details for volunteers will be available in February.

"It does inspire me to do more and to encourage others to try," Colwell said of seeing the impact of his work.

"My hope is that one person reading this will know all it takes is to try. That's all it took for me."
