FunGuyz magic mushroom shop remains open with little detail on what's next

Despite operating illegally, the store continues to welcome walk-in customers

After a very brief closure due to a raid by Waterloo regional police last week, magic mushroom shop FunGuyz is back open for business.

But for how long is the question.

One day after police arrested and charged a 20-year-old Cambridge man with possession for the purpose of trafficking on Nov. 14, the lights came back on and orders were being taken.

WRPS acknowledged the reopening but remains mum on next steps in dealing with the situation.

"Our Drugs and Firearms Unit is aware of the reopening and continues to monitor and assess the situation," Melissa Quarrie, public information officer for WRPS said.

Psilocybin being sold is classified as a criminal offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act, as it's designated as a schedule three drug. Psilocybin causes those who take it to experience hallucinations and an altered state of consciousness.

Multiple attempts were made to contact FunGuyz owner Hector Hernandez about the raid and subsequent reopening but he didn't respond.

Cambridge isn't the first FunGuyz to be interrupted by police, as locations in Barrie, St. Thomas and Windsor have also been raided.

Upon the store's initial opening, Hernandez admitted he was operating without a business license and said he was currently working his way through the court system to fight for legalization of the substance.

"I ask the community to spend 20 minutes of their time reading about the good things psilocybin can do and get an idea of what it is instead of just saying it's illegal," Hernandez said earlier this month before the raid.

"You should have the right to take a medicine you choose and we're here for the public."
