Renovations have begun at Idea Exchange’s Preston location to improve accessibility and rejuvenate the current exterior of the building.

The project should take approximately four months to complete.

“Our library and gallery staff will continue to provide a community space that is welcoming to all during the renovations,” said Chrissy Hodgins, Idea Exchange CEO in a press release. “And we are excited to unveil the building's refreshed look once the renovation is complete.”

The building remains open during the renovations; however, visitors will notice some changes in their use of the facility:

  • Primary access to the building will be moved to the community garden doors at the back of building through the garden space, which are accessible.
  • The exterior book drop will be unavailable during construction. Members are asked to return items during opening hours or to another location.
  • The parking lot at Preston will be closed during renovations. Alternative parking is available in other municipal lots and on the street.
  • Library and gallery programing will be offered during the renovations. Details are available online.

The building has experienced wear-and-tear on its exterior features in the more than 20 years since its last renovation, including the wooden slat walls and ceramic tile.

This renovation will replace and restore these features.

In the spring, it was announced that Idea Exchange would receive $135,000 from the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), to support the project.

“Idea Exchange’s Preston location is a hub for the local community to enjoy. With these improvements, this location will provide more accessibility and increase vibrancy. Our government supports the rejuvenation of places like Idea Exchange in Preston that bring people together and make our neighbourhoods stronger,” said MP Filomena Tassi, on behalf of FedDev Ontario.
