New COVID-related death reported in region Tuesday

A new COVID-related death was confirmed in the region on Tuesday. It raises the local death toll to 403.

It's the first local death to be reported since March 30.

The number of patients in hospital with COVID has risen by five to 56. Seven patients remain in intensive care.

Region of Waterloo Public Health also confirmed 131 new cases, putting the overall total at 43,582. The resolved case rate is 96.3 per cent.

The active caseload is up to 1,170.

In terms of variants of concern, the region's dashboard shows 449 of those cases (92.4 per cent) have been linked to the Omicron variant since March 6.

85.9 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.30 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 293,000 third doses. 50.8 per cent of those 12 and over have received a third dose.

54.8 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 39.7 are fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the province reported 2,300 new cases Tuesday.
