Beginning on the Victoria Day long weekend, the City of Cambridge will close a street in two core areas for patio season.
“This is about placemaking and creating space for our community to flourish and people to connect with each other,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “Pedestrian friendly spaces benefit local businesses. Our patio programs are necessary for our hospitality sector to rebound post-pandemic. We are thrilled to be welcoming it back and we hope all will continue to shop, dine and enjoy our unique downtown areas throughout the months ahead.”
The following streets will be closed:
• Main Street between Ainslie Street and Water Street in Downtown Cambridge (Galt) will be closed to vehicles seven days a week starting Friday, May 20 through Monday, Oct. 10.
• Queen Street East between Guelph Avenue and Tannery Street in Hespeler Village will be closed to vehicles on weekends starting Friday, June 3 to Sunday, Oct. 9. Weekend closures will begin each Friday at 4:30 p.m. and conclude on Sunday at 9 p.m.
In March, council approved the continuation of the city’s temporary road closure and patio programs. The programs were first introduced in 2020 to support businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Last fall, the city sought public feedback on the programs and received an overwhelmingly positive response in favour of continuing them.
