Pedestrian bridge would link Mill Run Trail to new south side trail in Hespeler

The City of Cambridge is launching a Class Environmental Assessment for a new pedestrian bridge over the Speed River

Cyclists and hikers could soon have a new trail in Hespeler and better access to an existing one if the city’s proposal to link the Mill Run Trail to a planned south side trail with a new pedestrian bridge moves forward.

The City of Cambridge has launched a B Class Environmental Assessment for the bridge and is seeking public comment on the proposal through the Engage Cambridge website.

Earlier this spring, the city held a public information centre on the proposed south side multi-use trail between Guelph Avenue to Winston Boulevard, parallel to Queen Street West.

Now it’s compiling public recommendations for the trail, which the city hopes will improve walkability and cycling in downtown Hespeler. A goal in the city's Cycling Master Plan is to provide the surrounding community a better connection to the Speed River.

The study for the bridge will identify the need for a connection that is safe and provides barrier-free access for all ages and abilities, while looking at potential impacts to the environment.

Upcoming work on the project includes an ecological analysis and field work, an archeological assessment, geotechnical analysis and cost estimate.

A Public Information Centre on the bridge, possibly in an online format, will be conducted to solicit input from residents.
