After battling a pandemic, a new location, parking woes and street closures, Sugar Daddies in downtown Galt has officially shut its doors for good.

In a social media post owners Greg and David Gardner-Orbon let their customers know that after some deliberation, they would be closing their location in Cambridge.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closure of our cherished Sugar Daddies Bakery Inc. production facility in the heart of downtown Galt," read the post.

The couple has operated in two locations on Main Street over the past five years and have had their challenges with the pandemic and parking issues in the core. In the post they reference “insurmountable challenges” as the reason for the closure.

“Our choice is rooted in safeguarding our mental and emotional well-being, holding fast to our values amidst adversity."

Despite the financial toll that the owners will incur from closing down their flagship location, they chose to prioritize personal integrity and commit to their values.

Greg told CambridgeToday that they are still processing everything and would prefer not to add any additional comments at this time.

The bakery owners did however confirm that they will still be going ahead with their plans to open a new location in Waterloo at 130 Columbia St. W. in the spring and will continue to operate out of their Hamilton location.

Sugar Daddies has become another statistic in a rash of businesses closing throughout the city and adding to the list of vacant properties looking for tenants.

Downtown Cambridge Business Improvement Area Executive Director Brian Kennedy previously told CambridgeToday that they have put an emphasis on building the core over recent years with seasonal road closures and renovations to draw people in.

Greg previously had some issues with the road closure as it would prevent some of his customers looking to park close to the store, run in and grab their orders.

The former Cambridge bakers thank their loyal customers and their steadfast support and hope to see them in their new ventures.
