On May 8, Public Health Ontario is reporting 1,167 COVID-positive patients in hospital and 207 people in intensive care units due to COVID.

Of the 207 people in ICU's due to COVID, 173 are still testing positive for the virus.

Today's report includes nine deaths, all of which occurred within the last month. There was also an additional death added to the provincial total based on data cleaning and the death occurred more than one month ago.

There are also 1,938 new COVID cases, although new case counts could be underestimated as testing is limited.

The May 8 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • 2,503 recoveries and nine deaths since yesterday's report.
  • Among the new cases confirmed today are 220 unvaccinated people, 339 vaccinated people with two shots, and 1,285 vaccinated people with booster shots.
  • Lab-confirmed testing is mostly limited to Indigenous people, hospitalized people, and those who live or work in high-risk congregate care settings. As such a majority of the people being tested are fully vaccinated as per provincial or workplace mandatory vaccine policies.

Hospitalizations

  • 1,167 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 42 per cent were hospitalized because of COVID-19 and the other 58 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID.
  • There are 207 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID. Of those, 68 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19 and the other 32 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID.
  • There are 90 COVID patients on ventilators.
  • Not all hospitals report on weekends, so hospitalization numbers are incomplete on Sunday and Monday.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,274,910 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and reported 1,237,805 recoveries and 12,972 deaths.
